Dan Divelbiss - Appropriate Technology
A Little Bit About Me:
During my junior year of college I was doing some honest contemplation on how I was created and why I was created the way I was. As part of my college career there was a required internship in which I learned about the engineering field through practical experience. But something was missing from this career path. A large part of my faith had been a passion to serve directly with the poor and dispossessed. I was asking myself, “Why do my passions seem so incompatible?” I loved serving and encouraging others to directly participate through service but at the same time I was gifted in an engineering field. It seemed that the two didn’t fit. But I recognized that this is how I am and I decided to explore where these two ideas meet. After researching, the field of international development caught my attention as a way to use technical skills to serve the least of these. This time of searching brought me to Guatemala the spring of that same year. During my first trip down I attended language school and visited development organizations to see what they did and how they did it. Then I met Margarito Vasquez through a friend of a friend of a friend. Margarito had offered to take me to visit an organization he knew well. After seeing the organization, Margarito began to explain to me how he wanted to do something similar in his village, serving his people. Following this, I spent two weeks volunteering with Margarito and then I returned to Cincinnati to finish school. After my experience, I began to explore opportunities to work and serve abroad using my engineering training. Every option which presented itself did not compare to the work that I had seen during the time spent with Margarito. Recognizing how I had been created and seeing the work I had been exposed to, confirmed my calling to Guatemala.
